Delft Urn, Family Heirloom - The Lion and the Butterfly- Part I
The inspiration for this new painting is a cherished family heirloom from my mother-in-law. This beautiful Delft urn is one of identical pair. They once belonged to Brian’s grandmother and will eventually belong to Astrid. But in the meantime, one of them is my Muse. I find the shape and proportion simply perfect and even though they are quite old, the blue and white glaze with its freestyle floral pattern conveys freshness and timelessness.
The stoic lion at the top of the lid stands on guard, but looks a little lonely so I gave him a Painted Lady butterfly to keep him company.
“Le Lion et le Papillon” on dirait le titre d’une des fables de La Fontaine.
