The fifth in my Rideau Canal series is completed - Rideau Canal, Smiths Falls, Poonamalie. 

An illustration-style painting inspired by vintage travel posters. I got the idea when my daughter visited from Montreal while showing her the sites and taking pictures, just like tourists. 

According to rideau-info.com, the name Poonamalie dates back to when the canal was under construction. The shaded and lush surroundings was reminiscent of a previous posting a British soldier had done in Poonamallee, India. I love the quiet, secluded and somewhat cozy feel despite its proximity to downtown Smiths Falls. Also remarkable is the original and very charming lockmaster's house, still standing, and home to the current lockmaster. If I was the camping type, I would pitch my tent here.

I don’t know if it’s too ambitious, but I intend to visit all the locks, from Ottawa to Kingston and paint the ones that speak to me. A UNESCO heritage site, I find it impressive that such an old structure (1832) is still operational and relevant today. Follow along and see how the next lock turns out.
