Life Cycle of a Fashion Cicada - Triptych

My latest project combines high fashion couture accessories and my fascination with insects. In this triptych, my beautiful daughter was the model for the lush peony headpiece. Cicadas - at different stages of their lives, are also beautiful models for these three paintings.

The Life Cycle of a Fashion Cicada
Embroidered and Beaded Stilleto Booties with Eggs, Larvae and Early Stage Nymph
6"x8"x7/8" acrylic on stretched canvas
Triptych
From eggs to larvae to early nymph stage, the cicadas crawl up the stiletto heels after living under ground for many years. They are well camouflaged amongst the intricately embroidered booties.

Reaching the earlobe of my redhead model, the late nymph is ready to split open. A beautiful cicada emerges and hangs there while its wings dry up.

Triptych
In the last painting of the triptych, the green gloves are like a plant on which the cicadas climb and transform, one last time, into precious gem set pieces of jewellery ready to fly away.

Below, are works in progress
