Dior's New Look 1947 - La Femme Fleur

La Femme Fleur de Dior - 1947 New Look
8" x 6" x 3/4" Acrylic on Canvas
Christian Dior's iconic New Look emerged in 1947. After years of wartime austerity measures and masculine uniforms, women around the world fell for this new silhouette – it was a revolution. The cinched waistline, contrasted with the volume at the hips and shapely bosom, the ample skirt, like a corolla, celebrated the return of femininity and prosperity. The look was seductive, romantic, sensuous, fragile and dreamy – "Femme Fleurs", Dior would say. The big shoulder pads popular in the previous decade were replaced by a rounded, more natural shoulder line, even the thick clunky shoes worn during the war were replaced by slender pointy heels. To this day, the most popular evening gowns and wedding dresses are modeled on this silhouette.
